Tropical rain

A heat wave
Birds flying low
The city suffocates

Thunder
Lightning
A drop of rain
Then another
And another
And then the downpour
The earthy smell rises
The majestic trees bow low
The wind scatters the leaves
In a roar
And the water washes everything clean
The rivers flow to the sea
The lakes swell
The debris floats
The earth regurgitates
The smell is a different kind
The roads are flooded
The people run and hide

And then…
Suddenly
It all stops
In a flash It’s all gone

The sun reappears
The streets are cleaner
The shoes are muddy
The trees are flagrant
The traffic resumes
The city steps out of the shower
Everything feels fresh
Breathe in
Breathe out
It won’t last.
